Building a Solid Foundation

feature photo

I’m looking at stick-like drawings of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and a Pyramid as a demonstration of the difference that laying a good foundation can make over time.

And so begins my first session with Dan Walker of River’s End Consulting.

Our initial focus is to understand how my business supports my personal goals and to determine whether it functions to give me personal satisfaction.

Simultaneously, we are laying my foundation by evaluating what is most important to me through the creation of a personal, and eventually business, mission statement that reflects who I am and what values I choose to live by. Dan explains this exercise will help maintain focus on my priorities when faced with decisions in the future.

The process creates time to evaluate, which naturally slows down my internal knowledge and allows me to question existing fundamentals. There isn’t anything I enjoy more than analyzing thoughts and behaviors, as demonstrated by my graduate education.

Dan says something to me that resonates deeply, “You enjoy solving problems, don’t you?” My initial reaction is to say, “No, I don’t like drama.” Then I add a disclaimer, “It depends on the situation.”

Days later I realize how accurate he is. I’ve never considered myself a “salesperson” and yet I have had great sales success in the past. Then it hits me. My sales success came, not because I was trying to sell something to make a buck, but rather because I truly believed that particular product or service would solve a problem for my client. I do get excited by evaluating situations in order to find ways to enhance personal lives and solve business problems.

Kudos to Dan, it’s not often people are able to quickly see what I haven’t already analyzed.

Between sessions, my homework is to continue to hash out the wording of my personal mission statement.

Has anyone created a personal mission statement they’d like to share?

Right now my personal missions statement is continual education. I've never been one to sit down right out a plan, though it would probably be in my better interest to do so. I like how you get to the core of who you are and what you do beyond the title of your job/profession. I think this is important as today, professions are no longer limited to labels.

Congratulations, Grasshopper. I think you will appreciate Dan's insights as you work with him.

Thanks for the nudge. It was time to reevaluate my mission statement. Here it is:

“I live with deep personal and spiritual integrity because everything is connected. I serve those who wish to be served, including myself, by focusing on wants and needs. I seek and clarify paths of continuous improvement, and I help people evolve by providing a safe place to stumble and grow.”

In the spirit of continuous improvement, I will be reviewing my business mission in the coming weeks.

I look forward to your watching your journey.

To walk my talk (live mindfully, passionately, prosperously) & inspired others to do the same.

Walking your talk. That's a good one. So many people do lots of talking and very little walking. I learned very early to always back up what I said with action. That's precisely why it's hard to pin me down for lunch sometimes. ;-)

Great one Todd, I really like this: “and I help people evolve by providing a safe place to stumble and grow.” What that says to me is that you won't be judgemental because we're all just trying to figure things out. We're all at different places with varying experiences, I'm a firm believer that if I'm not living someone else's life I have no right to make harsh judgements about it.

Does this mean I have to call you TJ Sensei now?

I am an advocate of continual education as well, not necessarily the scholastic kind. Thanks for your kind observations. I look at myself as human first, so if I improve who I am and what I know of myself, it will serve my friends, family AND clients. The result is clearer communication, I'm better able to inform my team & clients of expectations. If I am secure in my direction, I am able to interact in the truest form of communication – by leaving insecurities and ego out of the exchange. A better human being makes a better professional. :)

If you create a strong mission statement, I suspect you will begin to see a glimpse of what you would like your plan to be. It becomes easier.

The cool thing about Pat and I working together is…we are just getting started. She will be a GREAT student and client. Fun to work with too. I will post my personal mission statement at a later date. Would love to see more before I do

I have always been opposed to job titles as a description of WHO I am. What I do for a living is merely a component of my daily activity. That is why I love the concept of a “Personal Mission Statement”. There is no more important docuement that I carry with me throughout my day. I refer to it several times a day and read it to whom ever will listen. I make decisions, both business and personal, based on what I wrote. Makes those urgent deisions easier in the heat of the moment. I encourage everyone to write one and make it part of their every decision.

I am very proud of being part of Todd's devlopment as a business man. He was a great student and, now that he is no longer an official client, a great friend as well. Congrats on the success Todd!!!
