Stephen Clark is well known in Michigan as the evening news anchor at Detroit’s channel 7, WXYZ Action News. He’s also a singer and songwriter and dedicated family man. He’s a master in his profession, and is one of the limited media personalities offered the opportunity to interview a sitting President, and yet his “down to earth” personality has made him a social media favorite. He interacts, rather than broadcasts our local news, and has unassumingly brought the channel 7 news team into uncharted territory: a two way conversation with their viewers.

I had the pleasure of working with Stephen and his wife Larenne while selling real estate. Every Realtor in the Greater Detroit area would have jumped at the chance to work with the Clarks but Stephen chose me based on a few limited twitter conversations. If you’re trying to generate more business through the use of social media, Stephen offers some great advice about building relationships online. We conversed about best practices, choosing people to work with, and how interacting in an online community is parallel to communicating with neighbors.
The discussion of community naturally turned to the #backchannel; a twitter community that has formed around WXYZ Action News. Stephen discusses how he began the #backchannel (by accident!), and he discusses management’s reaction to him posting online.
