Facebook: a love/hate relationship! At times, we’re preoccupied by it. Other times, we swear off it. Most of the time, we visit it regularly. Well, the good folks at Facebook just announced a major change to … the Timeline. It first happened in New Zealand. Now it’s ‘time’ for the rest of us!
Rethinking the Timeline will mean, in brief, that the focus will shift in bright, new ways. Not only will the size of your own profile image change, every important part of the Timeline gains more space and prominence. Desktop navigation will take on more of the look & feel of the Smartphone experience. More emphasis will be placed on friend’s photos, as well as the feeds you follow. Here’s a shortlist of the major enhancements Facebook is making to its Timeline view:
- A basic three-column layout (if you include the ‘filmstrip’ navigation panel on the left), with the lion’s share of the focus on the middle column. That’s the new “spotlight”. It will feature your friends, as well as an easy to read calendar of events. The right column is reserved for newsfeeds, Games, Groups, and so forth; it will be very customizable.
- A responsive interface. This means that no matter what platform or device you view the Timeline on, it will look basically the same, adapting and adopting to screen sizes.
- A much needed change concerning your Follows: see the pages and public figures you like, all nicely organized in chronological order.
- The center of attention will come to bear on what you feel is important … on the people and stories you’ve taken time to include. You will be able to switch things up to, for instance, by focusing just on the pictures your friends have taken, or on the music you listen to. And, as hinted at above, Facebook isn’t leaving out your smaller, more portable friends: updates are in the works for the iPhone, iPad, and Android. (Sorry, we don’t know about the BlackBerry other manufacturers yet.) It seems to us that the feed’s focus is much more about how you want your information delivered versus how Facebook formerly wanted to deliver information to you.
