How to Write a Vision Statement

5 min read

A vision statement should define an organization’s purpose, with focus on its goals, in a few motivational sentences. The statement should be something that emotionally resonates with both the customers and employees.

What is a vision statement?

A vision statement is used to articulate the hopes and dreams of a company, while also inspiring that company’s employees and customers. It also helps serve as the framework of an organization’s strategic planning. A vision statement is usually between one sentence to a short paragraph long and should be something that can stand the test of time. Even as a company changes, its vision should stay relatively the same.

Make sure not to confuse a vision statement with a mission statement. While a vision statement does define an organization’s purpose, it also focuses on the organization’s goals and objectives.

Here are some tips on how to write a vision statement that encapsulates a company’s core ideals and goals.

1. Define the goals of your company

A vision statement is all about articulating a company’s dreams. While all of the ideas from this first step will likely not make the final cut, it is a great place to start. Write down plans for where the company will be in five to ten years. What kinds of things should be accomplished? How has the organization contributed to society? What does the company’s success look like? These are just a few questions to ask when getting started with a vision statement.

2. Add human value to the goals

Once the goals of the company have been laid out, review the goals to figure out how they affect people. This will help demonstrate that the company values its impact on the community. These values could include things like teamwork, equality, freedom, etc.

This will also help make the company more relatable. By adding human aspects to the vision statement, customers can better visualize a mental image to go along with that statement. It could be something as simple as “Every customer who leaves our store will do so smiling.” Just make sure the statement is specific to the company and its services.

3. Share the vision statement with others

Once the vision statement is written share it with others within and outside the company. Get feedback from owners and employees to see if the statement accurately aligns with the company’s goals and values. Ask customers to read it. Do they consider if it motivating enough to purchase from the business? Continue to hone the vision statement until it perfectly encapsulates the dreams and goals of the organization in just a few sentences.
