Its been several days since the #140conf. I learn something new at each conference I attend; one of my realizations from the 140 conference in Detroit is that I need time to process. I walked out of the Fillmore with so many thoughts swirling around in my head I couldn’t organize them into a concise article.
So many directions, so many ideas.
Then I realized Jeff Pulver is absolutely right, everyone in the room was a “character.”
Dictionary.com defines the word character in several ways, including:
- The aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
Becky Johns brings focus through her camera lens by taking a real time snapshot of individual characters in a frame. One such feature or trait; characteristic.
Ja-Nae Duane, strategist, defies singular categorization. She could have been known for an entirely different legacy except for a revolution point in her life that led her in a different direction.- Moral or ethical quality: a man of fine, honorable character.

Mayor Dave Bing opened the #140conf with an introductory overview of Detroit. - A person, esp. with reference to behavior or personality: a suspicious character.

Eric Brown of Urbane Apartments has made a name in the community by doing something unique in the rental market. His branding is unusual and very successful. - A person represented in a drama, story, etc.

Documentary film maker John Hammond showed us a trailer for his new documentary called blog ‘n the D. A symbol as used in a writing system, as a letter of the alphabet.
Jeff Pulver unveiled a cutting edge music video by Andy Grammer. The video has multiple plot lines that allows the viewer to select the next scene in the video via their keyboard. Watch it to see many familiar faces.- The symbols of a writing system collectively.
Songwriters and performers, Anthony Smith and the Lucy Angel Band provided the foot-tapping, head-noddingmid-day entertainment. - A significant visual mark or symbol.
Stephen Clark has become a symbol for consolidating traditional news media with social media. Founder of #backchannel, he has brought real time communication to our television sets while anchoring WXYZ’s news. Stephen Clark also moderated the Real Time News Panel consisting of NancyAndrews, Managing Editor/Digital Media of Detroit Free Press, RJ King, Editor of DBusiness Magazine, Steve Stewart, Program Director of WJR.
There were so many defined characters, this has become a multiple post….
