Character Found at the Detroit 140 Conference #140conf

October 25, 2010 By Pat Williams

Its been several days since the #140conf. I learn something new at each conference I attend; one of my realizations from the 140 conference in Detroit is that I need time to process. I walked out of the Fillmore with so many thoughts swirling around in my head I couldn’t organize them into a concise article.

So many directions, so many ideas.

Then I realized Jeff Pulver is absolutely right, everyone in the room was a “character.”

Dictionary.com defines the word character in several ways, including:

  • The aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
Becky Johns brings focus through her camera lens by taking a real time snapshot of individual characters in a frame.
  • JaNae TheSunQueenOne such feature or trait; characteristic.
Ja-Nae Duane, strategist, defies singular categorization. She could have been known for an entirely different legacy except for a revolution point in her life that led her in a different direction.
  • Moral or ethical quality: a man of fine, honorable character.
“Behind every wall of dysfunctionality & bad behavior there is a shining diamond waiting to be revealed.”Rabbi Yisrael Pinson is passionate about working with the Jewish Recovery Community.
  • Qualities of honesty, courage, or the like; integrity: It takes character to face up to a bully.
Jeremiah Staes is working hard through the Detroit News Hub to change the outside perception of Detroit.
  • Reputation: a stain on one’s character.
“People think Detroit sucks” is the first line from the trailer Lemonade: Detroit. Filmmaker Erik Proulx and Jerry Paffendorf, (Prince of Hope Porn) & creator of LOVELAND have teamed up to finance the film one frame at a time while proving people want more than Ruin Porn.
  • hajj_brandingGood repute.
Hajj Flemings, Founder of Brand Camp University discusses how the web can be help you mould your brand into whatever you choose it to be.
  • An account of the qualities or peculiarities of a person or thing.
Mayor Dave Bing opened the #140conf with an introductory overview of Detroit.
  • A person, esp. with reference to behavior or personality: a suspicious character.
“There is no substitute for real action, we need to get out from behind out mouse to do anything of substance.” Charlie Wollborg of Curve Detroit, says social media can become a mutual admiration society after a while making us feel better about ourselves but not impacting the rest of the world. Gateway drugs are a way to get more people involved in social media.
  • Informal . an odd, eccentric, or unusual person.
Eric Brown of Urbane Apartments has made a name in the community by doing something unique in the rental market. His branding is unusual and very successful.
  • A person represented in a drama, story, etc.
Watch video of Annisa Mayhew’s emotionally moving presentation recorded by @vincekern on his blog Vinman’s Vibe. Annisa beautifully blends a heart-wrenching story with humor.
  • A part or role, as in a play or film.
Documentary film maker John Hammond showed us a trailer for his new documentary called blog ‘n the D.
  • andy_grammer_videoA symbol as used in a writing system, as a letter of the alphabet.
Jeff Pulver unveiled a cutting edge music video by Andy Grammer. The video has multiple plot lines that allows the viewer to select the next scene in the video via their keyboard. Watch it to see many familiar faces.
  • The symbols of a writing system collectively.
Songwriters and performers, Anthony Smith and the Lucy Angel Band provided the foot-tapping, head-noddingmid-day entertainment.
  • A significant visual mark or symbol.
Stephen Clark has become a symbol for consolidating traditional news media with social media. Founder of #backchannel, he has brought real time communication to our television sets while anchoring WXYZ’s news. Stephen Clark also moderated the Real Time News Panel consisting of NancyAndrews, Managing Editor/Digital Media of Detroit Free Press, RJ King, Editor of DBusiness Magazine, Steve Stewart, Program Director of WJR.
  • There were so many defined characters, this has become a multiple post….
