Leprechauns: More Trouble Than They’re Worth

4 min read

You’ve heard the legend, catch a leprechaun and he’ll take you to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You’ll be rich! What you may not realize is that the leprechaun wants to keep that gold for himself. He’s mischievous, he’s devious, his sole purpose is to fool you and do what he chooses. He’d rather spend his time dancing instead of responding to your beck and call.

If you’ve got time to deal with the leprechaun’s games by micromanaging his every move, the riches at the end of the rainbow may be worth it but if you’re busy trying to keep up with your own responsibilities, it won’t be. In most cases the leprechaun manages to continue on his way and you’re left empty handed.

Virtual assistants can be a lot like leprechauns. If you find one that is cheap – whether you find them overseas or locally – you may think you’ve hit the jackpot. Ninety-nine percent of the time, what you’ll discover instead, is that they’re more work than they’re worth. You have to micromanage their every move, they don’t have the insight or the foresight to evaluate what’s best for your business. You may discover that you traded time actually completing the tasks for nearly the same amount of time managing all the details until completion.

Rather than chasing rainbows, you could spend a little more money and find a quality assistant who will partner with you by designing a map, and coordinating the tools that will take you to your pot of gold. And it will be a lot less stressful to get there!
