Tuesday Time Saving Tips: “Build It And They Will Come”

May 3, 2011 By Pat Williams

This very famous Field of Dreams (mis)quote references how beliefs can become reality if we just set them in motion. What movie goers seem to forget is that the farmer nearly went bankrupt waiting for “them” to come.

The same is true online. Once you’ve set up your blog and signed up for your social media accounts, the real work begins. You need to invest time in connecting with people on those platforms, if you are good at it, those connections naturally bring people to you. You need to offer substance to keep them coming back…. and since it’s a relationship… go visit them too! Depending on your business goals, you may need to grow the relationship from online to in person.

Scott Stratton‘s book, UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging. has some excellent suggestions:

  1. Choose one platform and build a solid following
  2. Jump in and engage
  3. Be consistent with your communication
  4. Spread the instances of communication out evenly over the week

My interpretation is much dryer than Scott’s, he delivers great advice in a funny and entertaining way. Read his book for the laughs and learn something in the process. Oh and use that affiliate link up there! 😉
