#Unmarketing Unreview

June 21, 2011 By Pat Williams

I finally took some much needed time to read Scott Stratten’s book, UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging. (affiliate link)

I expected a book on how to engage effectively via social media but it was much more than that. It was an entertaining book filled with case studies and solid relationship building advice topped with comical tidbits. You’ll want to read every word, including the footnotes!

What I valued the most was his candid sharing of his mistakes and how he learned from them. One in particular had me laughing hard. Not because I enjoy laughing at Scott (I really do) but because I recognized myself. Once upon a time I also had bandwidth fears. I lived in terror my site would max out and I’d have to pay out a fortune to my web host.

I related to his mailing list story. I had the sense to invest in a good email sending program but I, too, input (and unsubbed) everything manually. Once I had thousands of emails, I couldn’t figure out what to do with them. I sold products but my other little business (CyberCletch) was growing and the profits were higher there. I finally closed down the shopping cart and let the giant mail list lapse.

I try not to kick myself too hard. In those days we were learning as we went, we were cutting edge. All the applications and programs that make your life easier today, exist because we had to do it all manually over a decade ago.

Thank you Jennifer Marsik-Freiss for lending me your autographed book, I’ll now be purchasing my own reference copy!
